Exclusive: Kid Cudi’s Joopiter Auction Mixes Designer Rarities and Thrift-Shop Grails

Kid Cudi wants to make one thing clear: Although he’s known for his singular style, he’s never once employed a stylist.

“What you choose to wear is such a personal thing, and you should be the commander of that,” he muses to GQ. “If you’re just taking what a stylist is presenting you, it’s like being dressed by your parents. I just don’t know how people don’t want to go out and get their clothes themselves, you know?”

Over years of thrift-store digging, the multi-hyphenate born Scott Mescudi has built up a massive, albeit overflowing, collection of the choicest finds he’s copped throughout the years: a treasure trove of t-shirts, sneakers and everything in between. Enter: Joopiter, the Pharrell-owned auction house which has gained a reputation for adding a jolt of cool to a profession otherwise dominated by stuffy stalwarts like Christie’s and Sotheby’s.

“Joopiter has been wanting to do something with me for a while, so I recently reached out to the team and let them know I had some stuff I was willing to part with, things I’ve collected throughout my career,” explains Cudi. The catalog for the auction “On Another Planet: The Collection of Kid Cudi,” which launches today (with bidding kicking off March 13) encompasses a range of items that encapsulate his wide-ranging tastes. Along with rare pieces of Cudi merch, the auction’s roster includes vintage T-shirts celebrating some of Cudi’s favorite ’90s rock bands alongside designer threads from Dior and Gucci, Takashi Murakami screenprints, and chains by Jacob & Co and Cartier. There’s even a Louis Vuitton skateboard thrown in for good measure.

Ahead of the big auction, Cudi took GQ through some of his most personal pieces. “I have my own identity as far as my style goes,” he says. And now you can, too. His, anyway.
